So, You Still Want to Become Like Christ?

So you still want to become like Christ?  That’s great!  There is no nobler pursuit for a Christian than this.  In fact, I would be so bold as to say, that this is the ultimate end of the work of redemption which the LORD God has accomplished in our place through the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of His Name.  This is the end for which He saved us – namely, that we might become like Christ.  This is and has always been  the LORD’s purpose for His children from all eternity.

In case you think I am just making this up, let us look at three texts of Scripture which lead me to make this bold assertion:

Firstly, Romans 8:29 – God’s Purpose for His Children in Eternity Past:  “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

Secondly, 2 Corinthians 3:18 – God’s Work in the Lives of His Children at Present:  “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

Thirdly, 1 John 3:2:  God’s Ultimate End for His Children in Eternity Future:  “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

So, you still want to become like Christ?  I hope so.  But have you really thought what this really means for you now?  1 John 3:3, gives us a picture of what it means to become like Christ and how this ultimate reality should impact the lives of all of God’s children in the present.  He writes, “And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”

In my next post, Lord willing, we will examine this matter further.  Until then, keep on keeping on pursuing Christlikeness!  There has never been a nobler pursuit that has occupied the mind, hearts and lives of God’s children.  There has never been a nobler purpose that has occupied the mind and heart of the LORD Himself than the pursuit of His own glory in the salvation, sanctification and glorification of all of His children in and through Christ!  There will never be one for all eternity!  Therefore, pursuit it with all your might and go hard after God!

May the LORD richly bless you through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!

“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

  1. How I wish I was or could live like Him the rest of this life, whatever the cost. Amen
