You were made to worship the LORD God! There are two main reasons for that:
1. God is intrinsically and infinitely worthy of praise from all of His creatures. “Let everything that has breath, praise the LORD” (Psalm 150:6). His very Being commands worship. He is the LORD God Almighty who has no beginning and no end. He is from everlasting to everlasting God (Psalm 90:2). “Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” (Exodus 15:11)
2. Man can never find true satisfaction doing anything else. St. Augustine, the African theologian from the (13 November, 354 – 28 August, 430) wrote in his Confessions, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.” There is nothing in this whole universe that is big enough to satisfy the deepest human longing. “Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:25-26).
I like how the Westminster Shorter Catechism talks about this. It asks the question, “What is the chief end (purpose) of man? The answer goes like this: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” This is the truth that we all need to grapple with. When we are worshipping the LORD will are actually fulfilling the highest purpose for which we are made – and the opposite is true!
But according to the words of the Lord, Jesus Christ, true worship of God must be done “in Spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Thus, we need to be constantly seeking His Spirit’s help and we need to be guided by His truth in all matters regarding the worship of our Triune God! Wishing you the LORD’s blessings as you seek to worship Him in your context.
