The Best New Year Resolution Ever!

knowinggodbanKnowing God is the best resolution that anyone can make at any time, but especially at the beginning of a New Year.  Knowing God is eternal life. “…This is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

The LORD says, “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.  For in these things I delight, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).  Does this describe you?   Continue reading

Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying 24 Hours A Day

get-busy-living-or-get-busy-dying-5Today marks the end of the year 2014 – what has this year been like for you?  I am still processing what has happened this year, but all in all it’s been great!  It’s the first year in a while that I haven’t traveled anywhere far – I decided to stay close to my family and church this year and not travel as I normally do each year.  So, in that sense, it’s been good and refreshing and it has given me a lot of extra time with my family and church for which I am really grateful.

A Brand New, Well Packaged Gift for Everyone!

But another year starts tomorrow and we will all start on the same.  It’s a new and free gift that is being given to us by the Lord God, our Creator.  This brand new gift has been carefully wrapped and ready for us.  The year 2015 will be the same for all of us in the sense that we will all be given the same amount of seconds which will culminate into minutes, which will culminate into hours, which will culminate into days, which will culminate into weeks, which will culminate into months, which will culminate into a full year.  In 12 full months, the year 2015 will have come and gone.   Continue reading

Dealing with Death

Death is all around us.  We can’t seem to escape its presence and it won’t go away.  We can wish it did not exist, but we cannot disbelieve it out of existence.  One of the first bits of news that I read this morning, had to do with the horrible crash of the AirAsia Flight QZ8501.  “‘Bodies and Debris’ found in AirAsia search,” the headline said.  The pictures of family members weeping in the pain and anguish caused by this sudden loss of their loved ones are quite heart-wrenching.  AP_airasia_plane_relatives_jef_141229_16x9_992

I also read, a blog post by a woman who is dying of cancer.  Her name is Kara Tippetts, you may have heard of her already.  I have read one or two other posts by her before – quite challenging.  The first time I heard of her was when she wrote a letter to another lady who was also dying of cancer by the name of Brittany Maynard.  Brittany had decided to take her life using medical pills given to her by her doctor(s) in Portland, Oregon.  In the letter, which was entitled, Why We Don’t Have to Be So Afraid of Dying& Suffering That We Choose Suicide, Kara was pleading with Brittany not to do that.  Many others wrote to Brittany but their messages fell on deaf ears.  Brittany went ahead and took her own life on November 1, 2014.  She effectively committed suicide in an attempt to run away from the pain of dying.   Continue reading

Stock Taking for Your Soul

Every good business man will from time to time, close his business for stock taking.  This is standard practice for any business to succeed.  Closing a business for stock taking on a regular basis, allows the business owner to think carefully about his business and form an opinion about his business so that he can then decide how to best to run the business.  While the experience might be gruesome (especially when things are bad), it is good in the long run; while it might be painful, it is profitable; while it halts the business for a while, it is healthy for the business in the long-term.  Every good business man understands that.  The principle extends and applies to everything in our lives.  It applies to our cars (we have to get them serviced every so often so that we can keep using them).  Our bodies need regular check-ups by doctors so that we can continue living in them.  Our dishes need cleaning every day so that we can keep using them.  Our clothes need washing from time to time so that we can keep wearing them, on and on it goes.  It just makes sense.  It is so natural to do these things. How Can We Best Understand the Bible Today?  In this video, Dr. Michael Horton of the White Horse Inn talks about the centrality of Christ in all Scripture.  He rightly argues that, “The Bible is an unfolding drama with Jesus Christ as the central figure.”

when-will-my-life-not-suckWhen Will My Life Not Suck? by Ramon Presson (as Tim Challies says, this is a bad title for a good book).  But the book is worth reading and it’s available on Amazon for only $2.51.

Signs of Desperation for Membership in the Church of Scotland:  In apparent desperation, the Moderator for the Church of Scotland is subtly proposing to introduce virtual church membership for the denomination.  “I’m looking for a way of including the many hundreds of people who are fully engaged in the practical and project work that our churches are doing throughout Scotland, but whose belonging to the faith community is not necessarily complemented by regular attendance at Sunday worship.” I find this appalling.  What about Hebrews 10:24-25 and related Bible passages?

Seizing Solar Power in Argentina:  Read about one woman’s mission to harness solar rays to chart a path to energy independence in arid northern Argentina.

Every Homeless Person Has a Story:  A homeless man is given $100 and secretly followed to see how he will spend it – what he does is unbelievable.  Watch this video to find out.

Bibliotheca Update:  This short video (just a little over 4 minutes long), gives the most recent update on the Bibliotheca update.  Bibliotheca is the entire biblical library separated into volumes and designed purely for reading. The text is reverently treated in classic typographic style, free of all added conventions such as chapter numbers, verse numbers, section headers, cross references and notes.  This video provides gives some background information to the Bibliotheca project.
