Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me (Psalm 119:1-8)!
Psalm 1 equates blessedness with walking in God’s law. Psalm 32 talks of blessedness in terms of God offering forgiveness of sin to the sinner once and for all. Here the Psalmist brings these two truths together and shows us that blamelessness before God is true blessedness. This man’s blamelessness is not founded in himself. It is founded in the mercy of God towards sinners. The Psalmist has in view a man of God, a believer, one who lives his life under the influence of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Spirit. He is happy in the Lord, delights in His Word and shuns all evil. He therefore longs for more of God’s Word in order that he may praise the Lord with an upright heart. Through His Word, the Lord God offers forgiveness for sin to all who trust in Jesus Christ and seek to walk in His ways empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Lord, teach me Your righteous rules that I may praise You with an upright heart, through Jesus Christ. Amen!
